One of the very first rules for preparing a site for the world wide web is to choose a domain name and register it.

It's best if the name you choose relates directly to your product or services that you will be advertising. Specific names are in itself a keyword that the search engines will use to generate traffic for you.

If you are selling doggie treats, the best domain name would be DoggieTreats.com or DoggieEats.com or maybe Doggie-Treats.com.  If you like all 3 then go for it - register all of them.

When you register multiple domain names for the the same product you would be wise to create a seperate index.html page for each domain with links to the product page.  A teaser before for product catalog with a sales offer like "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" or "10% off your 1st order" or how about "All Natural Doggie Treats, click for our product profile"

So now you have the domain name(s) you know relate to your product, what more can you do? 

Once you have your domain name(s), you can begin to design your main page. The search engines will look at a variety of different parts to list or rank your site.

The page title shouldn't be "home" or "page 15", you need to give each page a name that corresponds to what you are showing on it.

If you'd like to list a title after you build a page that may work out better, especially if you are trying to decide what to put on the page. Once you do the graphics and design elements, then it is vital that you give the page a title.

Try to make your title list your attributes - from the title above, the search engines can pick up "doggie treats", Natural treats, dog treats, dog breed, dog breed size, size dog, all natural treats

The biggest SEO mistake is trying to cram all types of keywords into the title, this may backfire and have the exact opposite effect, with search engines thinking you have no relevant content. With standard HTML editors it is very simple to create a "title page" for each page on your site. If you want to optimize your site you can create more pages with great relevant titles and showcase the products you have. Options would be:

"DoggieTreats.com, chicken flavored dog treats for small breed dogs."

"DoggieTreats.com puppy treats encourages strong bones and teeth for dogs under 1 year."

Each one of these pages are relevant and showcase the products DoggieTreats.com carries. The reason you need to list your common website name is so if someone is just looking they can tell you have a number of products.

Another factor is meta tags both description and keywords.

meta name="description" content="Healthy, homemade dog treats made from all natural ingredients."

meta name="keywords" content="homemade dog treats, healthy dog treats, dog breath mints, bacon, chicken, beef,  

There are several keyword generator available that will assist you in listing the most responsive keywords for your content.

Linking your site to competing sites will gain you market ranking. Everytime someone is looking for XYZ Dog Treats, your site comes up in the ranking if you have a link to XYZ Dog Treats on your site.

If you don't like the idea of linking to direct competitors then add relevant sites, DogBeds.com, Dog Sitters Abound, or KittyKatExpress. Similar sites but not directly competing with you. You can also list your products on sites like Shopping.com or YahooShopping or MSN & Google base.

The idea is to find links that enhance your ranking in your marketplace of choice.
